Application Support Engineer, Chennai Engineering

1. What are your memories of your first week on the job?

I was asked to set up a project in my first week of joining. I took up the challenge which entailed understanding the systems and procedures before carrying out my tasks. I ended up completing the project successfully and that gave me a world of confidence. I was also appreciated by my supervisor.

2. How did your skills develop over the period?

When I joined Foster Wheeler, I had a great opportunity to develop my skills working on different software in real-time environment. I also started handling a large volume of users; this in turn has been a learning experience for me almost everyday. I also got good support from my peers and supervisor to further update my skills. I handled almost 100 users in my first project that gave me the self-confidence to handle high-volume tasks.

3. What has been the high point of your time with the company so far?

I was part of the team to carry out server migration activity – ‘physical servers to blade servers’ for all projects. This is the first ever time I carried out such a task.

I had to travel to Reading, UK, for the first time to carry out a task as part of the Engineering Applications Group (EAG). The EAG team in Reading was quite convinced about my deliverables as well as the ICT team in India.

4. How do you find experiencing different cultures and working practices?

Foster Wheeler India has employees from all over India with different cultural backgrounds. People are very co-operative. I see people enjoying their jobs and displaying a high quality of teamwork.

5. How important is teamwork to the role you do?

Teamwork is extremely important for the kind of job I do. EAG as a group is into problem-solving and trouble shooting. Needless to mention, if there’s no teamwork we’ll not be able resolve any issues. Problem-solving is all about sharing different ideas and in this dynamic world, there’s a lot that I learn even from junior engineers.
